The Department of Mathematics and Statistics came into existence in 1985. It offers
postgraduate and research program in Mathematics and Statistics. Prof. S.N. Singh was the
founder head of the department (1985-2007). The department caters to the needs of knowledge
based education to students and seeks to develop problem solving skills within the domain of
mathematical spectrum, and suggests applications to other branches of applied sciences.
Recently the department is concentrating to take up contemporary issues including inter-group
and trans-disciplinary subjects for teaching, learning and research to cope up with interfacing
thrust areas of mathematical sciences at turning and cross roads of knowledge frontiers in its
programs of M.Sc. and Ph.D. About 22 students of the department have qualified JRF/NET/
GATE examinations. The passed out students of the department have been contributing to the
nation in their glorious capacities of different departments of banking, LIC, Civil Services
including coveted teaching and research institutions such as state and central universities,
NITs and IITs and abroad.
Faculty members have internationally traveled. They have esoteric exposure to their
respective knowledge domains. The department has produced around about 50 Ph.D. scholars.
The faculty members have got published more than 300 research papers, 150 of them in
international journals of high impact factors. Almost all the faculty members have received
prestigious fellowships and presented their innovative researches at international platforms.
Presently, Prof. S. S. Mishra is heading the department. Prof. S.S. Mishra visited several
countries across the globe for substantial academic pursuits. Ite has bagged several national
and international awards and fellowships including best research paper award from Maryland
University USA, VIRA international award for distinguished scientist, grant fellowships such
as ICIAM Switzerland in 2007, International federation of Information Processing, Austria and
Berlin Technical University Germany in 2011. He was offered three times to present his invited
talks by Hyperion University, Bucharest, Romania in 2008, 2009 and 2010 consecutively in
the year 2019, Prof. Mishra was conferred Associate Fellowship Award of International Academy
of Physical Sciences (IAPS) and coveted “Shikshak-Shree Award” of State government of
Uttar Pradesh.
In the direction of research development and innovation, thrust areas of the mathematical
sciences have been focused. The faculty members have supervised several research projects
funded by reputed scientific agencies and departments such as UGC, UPCST and NBHM,
department of Atomic Energy, Govt. of India. The department is also associated with National
Board of Higher Mathematics, Government of India.
galaxy of renowned mathematicians and statisticians have not only visited the
department but also contributed to it in various forms by their penetrating insight into their
specialized disciplines of knowledge.
In addition, National conferences, Mathematics Olympiad and Lecture Series are the
regular features of the department. Prof. Satish Kumar Tripathi, B.U. University, USA and Prof.
Kamal Nayan Agarwal, Harvard University, USA delivered lectures in the department in 2009
and 2010. In 2010 and 2011. The department has organized a two-day national seminar
sponsored by Department of Higher Education, Govt. of UP on latest advances of mathematical
sciences. The department was announced as a centre of excellence by the Govt. of UP I 2010.
In the year 2018, an international conference of IAPS (CONIAPSXXII) and National
Workshop on R-Computing in the year 2019 were organized by the department.National
Mathematics Day was celebrated on December 22, 2020 by the students and faculty members
of the department in which two categories of students-one category of P.G. students and another
category of research scholars participated in the lecture competition held on “contribution of
Sriniwas Ramanujan to Mathematics”. A convocation week lecture was organized on March
15, 2021 in which a lecture on Demography was delivered by Prof. Himanshu Pandey, Dept.
of Mathematics and Statistics, DDU Gorakhpur University. An international e-lecture series
was organized by the department in which five international speakers from abroad delivered
their lectures on relevant topics of mathematical sciences hailing from USA, Singapore,
Germany, Nepal etc during June 20, 2021 to July 20, 2021. In the year 2021, an international
e-conference on “Current Advances in Mathematical and Computational Sciences” was
organized in between August 27-29, 2021 in which five speakers from foreign universities
delivered their lectures and in which Prof Satish K Tripathi, President of Buffalo University,
New York (USA) was chief guest in the inaugural function of the conference. Most revered
Shankaracharya Swami Nishchalananda Saraswati delivered his lecture on “Scope of Vedic
Mathematics” on Nov. 22, 2021 and a National Seminar was organized on Vedic Mathematics
and Its Applications during Nov. 29-30, 2021.
