Head of Department

The Department of History Culture & Archaeology, established by the 10th amendment in the first statute of Avadh University, G.O. No. 4924/15-10-84-1(3)-82, dated 3-/11/1984, is running composite course in History. The Founder Head of the Department was Prof. Maheshwari Prasad. In successive years Prof. Vijay Kumar Pandey, Prof. Ram Adhar Pandey, Prof. A. K. Mishra, Prof. Alok Mani Tripathi and Prof. M.P. Singh graced the Chair of Head. At present the department is working efficiently under the capable guidance of Prof. N.K. Tiwari. The syllabi cover various aspects of World history, Cultural history, Indian National Movement and Indian Archaeology from pre-historic period to industrial archaeology. Due to the paragon and pragmatic syllabus, many students have qualified UGC, NET/JRF examination and many have been selected as Lecturers, Principal in post graduate colleges and Professors in Central Universities. Apart from individual projects to the faculty members, a major project was sanctioned to the department by UGC. The department has organized several national seminars, refresher courses and lecture series to enhance the academic climate.

To propel and enhance the core studies in Janism the Government of Uttar Pradesh vide its notification No. 375 CM(15)94-95(2) /94, dated September 29, 1994 permitted to establish a research chair, Rishabhdeva Jain Shodh Peeth having one Reader, one Lecturer and Research Officer with the release of Rs. 25 Lakhs for the purpose. The State Govt. vide its notification No. 605/70-4-2001-44101/90 dt. 31/03/2001 has sanctioned Rs. 1 Crore for construction of building and development of infrastructure of Sri Ram Shodh Peeth. These Peeths, imbibed with research support facilities are casting great value to research works.

Masters Program in Tourism Administration (MTA) is successfully running in History, Culture & Archaeology Department since July 2005 under self finance scheme. Around 75% students of this course have got job in different sectors and department of tourism. From the current session 2017-18 the department started a new job oriented course B.Voc. in Travel & Tourism. Under the provision of Government of India's Antiquities & Art Treasure Act of 1972, the Government of Uttar Pradesh sanctioned Rs. 29 Lakhs and 20 thousand for establishing a Museum in the Department. This Koshal Museum, displayed with significant artifacts is a prominent centre for research scholars and curious visitors.
